Just saw Supernatural ep 10, which I think was the last episode for a while. You know, I don't often say this about Supes (much as I like the show), but

SPOILERS!

REALLY! I MEAN IT!

Episode thoughts:

Loved the ongoing Ruby/Sam action. My, but the actress playing Ruby this season is much better than the average CW chick, and sooo much better than ParisHilton!Ruby. In the torture scene/obligatory problematic femsploitation moment of the episode I kept wincing and waving don't kill the good actress! at the CW.

Speaking of acting, props to Jensen Ackles for the last scene. I'm not usually impressed by Dean's emoting (he's always so obviously "playing" the bad boy, you know?) but apparently Hell is really, really bad. I was convinced. Go Ackles.

And the guy playing Castiel! Nice "oh I feel somewhat bad about this" reaction to the Dean/Anna kiss at the barn.

And Anna! Last episode I was pretty sure she was the Antichrist (which would have been awesome.) The fallen angel revelation was nifty (though she still might be the Antichrist. And I was wondering for a bit there if she was Lucifer. But apparently not.) Again, another good actress. What is up at the CW? Isn't that the network that hires pin-ups over actresses?

The "grace" plot was a little Stardust for me, but props to the Supes folks for doing something a bit different with angel mythology. I really liked the Heaven vs. Hell confrontation in the barn. I wish, though, that the writers hadn't decided to make Sam have planned the whole thing. The "omg, they were planning it all along!" has been done SO many times on the show, and really, it would have been far more interesting to have Dean's/Ruby's betrayals been *real.* Because Ruby can't just be Sam's cheerleading section. She's a demon, for godsakes. She'd better be up to something.

(And wasn't it great that Sam + Dean have demon + angel love interests, respectively? I like these girls. I want them to stay around.)

Other things: I'm glad the psychic came back in this episode. She struck me as an annoying, one note character the first time around, but she's a lot cooler now that she's blind. I love that she's sporting demon eyes. I wonder if that's significant?

Further plot points: we need to find out what Bobby's up to. I doubt Dean told the whole truth about hell - specifically, he may have tortured some people we know. And Sam clearly hasn't told Dean the whole truth. I wonder what he's doing to power up his evil batteries? Drinking blood? Sacrificing babies? Playing D&D? Waatching Gossip Girl? Only time will tell.

Which I think may be a conscious performative choice. Jensen Ackles is playing Dean "playing" the bad boy.

I hope she's up to something, yes, but it would have been a different turning point had the betrayals been real, and I like the turning point they had instead: this set the stage pretty clearly as "these guys versus BOTH sides." And the mid-season break is a good place to establish that dynamic -- to not just bring Sam and Dean back together as a solid and competent team, but to add Anna and Ruby to that equation. I think the revelation of the plan was ham-handed, but I do like the fact of it.

I love that she's sporting demon eyes. I wonder if that's significant?

I doubt it, since they sort of hung a lampshade on it, with Pamela saying "kinda demony, aren't they? But they're just plastic." They might be temporary objects until she gets better ones. Or, y'know, she likes freaking her clients out. <g>

I doubt Dean told the whole truth about hell - specifically, he may have tortured some people we know.

Or other complications. I agree that "I got off the rack and tortured some people" is probably not the end of it. Bela would be a distinct possibility.

I wonder what he's doing to power up his evil batteries?

Gossip Girl, definitely.

More seriously: the abilities come from Azazel's blood, so if there's more of a story there, it may expand the cosmological framework and place Azazel more specifically in the hierarchy of Hell. After all, who has the authority to drag them down?

I'm with you on Ackles playing Dean playing the bad boy. Result is, I don't get to see him playing Dean as Dean very often. I thought he did a greap job in this ep.

Re: demon eyes. I was actually thinking in another direction - Pamela was punished for looking at the angels by losing her eyes. The sign of her subsequent blindness/punishment are (fake) white demon eyes. I was wondering if there's a reason the demons look the way they do. Also - I wonder if Pam will be able to fake being a demon in a future ep?

Forgot about Bela. That would be awesome.

Nah, I still the same about the midseason turning point. They'd already established the Winchesters vs. Heaven AND Hell thing. They'd brought Anna + Ruby into the equation. It would have been nice to establish that these characters had different motivations for joining the alliance, as opposed to keeping beating the "we're all unproblematically on the same side" drum.
