You know, I wish we lived in a world where that ad could be seen in the light it should be seen in, as relatively harmless personification (as the article says). But we so totally don't live in that world. What a mess that'll cause!!
Personifications are never harmless because they are personifications and therefor come with all the baggage of human interactions. This one is definitely not harmless. It should be noted, though, that there are three versions: 1) white dominant, 2) black dominant, and 3) equal footing.
Someone noted that the ads are in Amsterdam, not the US, and speculated that Sony is trying to have it both ways: they can claim it was a relatively harmless personification in the target market, while reaping the high publicity from controversy in a global media.
