I'm sorry I've been incommunicado recently. I always forget how busy the back-to-school season is, and between that, the move, and well, everything else that's been going on recently, I haven't updated lj as much as I should. I owe numerous people coffee and lunch sessions; I owe my students lots of grading; I owe myself a cohesive exam project, committee and reading list. That's just for starters.
I will say the following:
1) Fucking hurricane. Fucking POOR response from the administration. Applause to all of those who are helping out, both through volunteer work and through posting info on the relief efforts.
2) On the whole, I love my students. The crappy ones just annoy me, that's all.
3) "Sin City" is the biggest "masculinity - wow" movie I've seen all summer. After reviewing my Chinese version, I finally discovered that its subtitles are taken from Campion's "The Piano." The best part of the Chinese version is that the subtitles occassionally synch up with the action in a very Pink-Floyd-Meets-Oz kind of way, making for a very strange movie.
4) Goat cheese is my newest favorite ingredient in everything.
5) I need bookcases. If you know of anyone who's getting rid of bookcases cheaply, let me know.
6) "Serenity" can not come out too soon.
7) Angelathons are an excellent idea, but at this point in the semester, Angel tapas are infinitely more practical.
8) Re: the DOFP game (which I have not yet oficially commented on). AWESOME.
9) Having a tv again, thanks to drydem: excellent.
10) Having an broken a/c pour litres of water all over my bedroom: not so excellent.
11) Having management wait a week before even trying to fix it: even less excellent.
12) Having it still not fixed: extremely sucky.
13) Finding a framed picture of Howe Sound at a Bloomington garage sale - surprisingly great.
14) Realizing this list needs to stop at some point so I can get on with my day: irritating.
That's not *all* the news that's fit to print, but it covers some things at least. :)

Date: 2005-09-09 12:17 am (UTC)It's my favorite French appetizer. Buy (or I suppose you could bake, but that seems excessive) a GOOD French baguette. Do not buy one that is truly hard in all its glory. Slice it into 1-2 inch slices. Slice a log of goat cheese (or two if the appetizers are going to more than a couple). Put the slices of cheese onto the slices. Turn the oven to broil, and toast the bread on a baking sheet, close to the heating element. When the bread looks brownish and nice, you're done- I just check around every five minutes, because I am inexact. Place artistically on a bed of romaine lettuce.
Even better is Nigella's goat cheese omelette. Use a little pat of butter, or better yet a spritz of olive oil, in a nonstick pan. Add some scrunched up and beaten mint (fresh and chopped is best). Just a little bit, you don't want to hurt your taste buds. When the mint is sizzling, add 3 (beaten to within an inch of their life) eggs, and then promptly add a log of goat cheese, sliced or just smooshed into small bits to spread through the eggs. Do the usual omelette thing (cook until nearly done, attempt not to turn it into scrambled eggs). Goat cheese doesn't really melt, but it blends with the eggs as they cook. Garnish with a little extra mint, and enjoy. I usually eat this as a dinner entree, it's simply too much and too rich for breakfast.
Cheers!
