Participants from the fields of history, philosophy, religious studies,
classics, art, folklore, literature, anthropology, musicology, and
archeology are sought for the formation of an interdisciplinary reading
group, the Convivia Magica, for the discussion of scholarly research
pertaining to the occult (e.g., alchemy, magic, witchcraft, divination,
amulet and talisman construction, natural philosophy of the occult,
magical ritual studies, etc.). The group is open to graduate students
and faculty, and advanced undergraduates can be sponsored to the group
by the senior scholars.
The Convivia will meet bimonthly (or more frequently, depending on
interest), and will be hosted by the department of History and
Philosophy of Science in Goodbody 107 (seminar table room).
The first meeting of the group will be a short organizational brown-bag
meeting on Thursday, September 14 from 12:00-1:00 in Goodbody Hall 107.
This meeting will be used to propose material for the semester’s
reading, establish the meeting day, time, and frequency (based on room
availability and other factors, the choices are limited to a regular
lunchtime meeting MTW or F in the HPS seminar room, or an evening
meeting in the HPS reading room on T or R), and to get acquainted with
each other.
Interested participants are asked to bring at least one item (book,
article, current research paper, etc.) to introduce in the first
meeting for consideration in the group’s reading schedule for the
semester. Feel free to bring more than one item, and also to offer your
own work-in-progress for consideration. A ballot of candidate material
will be sent to the group listserv after the initial meeting, and the
semester’s reading schedule will be selected by majority interest.
All future meetings/discussions will be led by the person who proposed
the material to be read for the day.
If you cannot make the initial meeting but still wish to join the
group, please email sarahs@indiana.edu with your name, available
meeting times (see limitations above), and the title (or a PDF/ static
JSTOR link) of material you would like to propose for the semester’s
reading itinerary.
Those planning to participate are asked to give advance notice by
subscribing to the group’s listserv - email listserv@indiana.edu with
the message: subscribe convivia-magica-l (in the body, not the subject
line, of the email).
See you September 14th!
