I'll be blogging about this fairly soon myself, but yes, agreed that the romance is weak. We thought it worked only because Thor had, as various characters noted, awesome abs, and Natalie Portman was cute, so, you know. That was the only foundation I saw for their relationship, as much as the two actors really tried to sell it.
My guess is that a significant part of the film dealing with S.H.I.E.L.D. was cut from the film, because certain points of that didn't make much sense if you tried to think about it too hard. Not that we did.
