I could comment on the Facebook cross-posting thing...

...or I could discuss the news that Warner is thinking of developing Gaiman's The Sandman as a TV series. (Thanks, [livejournal.com profile] moonandserpent, for the info.)

For those who don't know what The Sandman is, or who have no memory of the worst movie never made, aka the notorious Jon Peters Sandman movie debacle, it's collected in an excellent series of graphic novels and you should read it.

My feelings are mixed on this news. I'd love to see a *good* adaptation of "The Sandman," and adapting it for television makes a lot more sense than trying to turn Gaiman's idiosyncratic 75-issue-story into a 2 hour movie. But... by Warner? In what universe would an effective Sandman adaptation work on mainstream network TV?

On the plus side, rumour has it that Eric Kripke, creator of The CW’s “Supernatural," is apparently their top pick as showrunner.

Now "Supernatural" is a solid show, made even more impressive once you realize how hard Kripke & co had to work to sneak their arc-laced episodes past the WB story-arc ban. But hard though that was, Supes has an obviously network-friendly concept: "good-lookin' men travel America, hunting and killing monsters." It's hard to see how any iteration of "The Sandman" could work as easily.

At least let's hope we never, ever see Morpheus beating up on giant robotic spiders or launching himself into the air screaming “As though your puny weapons could harm Morpheus! The lord of sleep! The Sandman!!!!”

Oh, Jon Peters. It's funny only because it didn't happen.

My Sandman The TV Series would be the story of teenaged Rose Walker and the strange man she meets in her dreams. She is a good enough POV character and is present in enough story arcs of the book that you could fudge and maker her the focal point (especially given what she ends up being in the book) of a series.

You make the Sandman (and the Endless) the axis that all these characters - Rose, Lyta, Thessaly, Matthew the Raven orbit.
