Feb. 17th, 2007 12:50 pmFrom the NY Times: Italy Indicts C.I.A. Operatives in ’03 Abduction. That's going to cause a few problems for America's ability to conduct foreign intelligence gathering.
What's at stake here is a) the obligation of governments to defend the sovereignty of their own legal system and the rights of their citizens b) the degree to which international security interests can or should trump human rights c) the "real politik" of nations who have neither the power to nor economic interest in opposing the US versus the political sentiments of their citizens d) the problem America faces in conducting international operations when its Cold War support has been eroded... and the list continues. Quite a mess.
But on the completely irrelevent side, what stands out for me in this article is the following sentence:
“We believe there has been either active collusion by several E.U. governments or turning a blind eye,” one member of the European Parliament, Baroness Sarah Ludford of Britain, said this week.
Baroness Sarah Ludford is quite possibly one of the best names *ever.* I love the pairing of the ordinary "I shop at Marks & Spencers" name with "Baroness." That's just awesome.
