The pope is dead, long live the pope.

Out late last night; fun, but feeling miserable and run-down today. Too much stuff to do. Arg.
Friday's conference went well. Conferences are a weird beast though - they usually leave me questioning my career choice and professional identity by lunch time (or mid-afternoon if the lunch is good); this one was no exception. Still, got to hear some neat talks, give my paper, and gain a cv line, so all's good with that.
While I missed the mass Sin City screening, I did get to see the Ring 2, which was a lot better than I'd expected. What's successful about this movie are the points at which it departs from the original; the points at which it retreads the original feel a bit pointless. It left me wanting to see Rachel, her son, Samarra and the clueless love interest starring in supernatural version of Three's Company.
Last night was fun - went bar scouting with G and V. Didn't get much beyond the Vid though. Rediscovered in the process that I am really, really hopeless at darts. Must work on this. :(
So, on another random note: the Pope's dead. I'm not sure how I feel about this. Everyone knew it was coming, of course - he's held on surprisingly long. While I don't agree with a lot of the pronouncements he's made, I had a lot of respect for him as a pope who saw his religious leadership as an active duty. I hope the next pope - whoever they choose- is someone who is equally willing to make a strong stance (albeit a more liberal one) on controversial issues and make changes that will shake up the structure of the church. The American govt supposedly had a lot of say in the election process though (unofficially of course) and given the current administration I'm afraid we're going to get either a staunch conservative or an American yes-man (which will also = conservative, but in a slightly worse way.)
Fingers crossed.
