Divorced Before Puberty

I feel like I need to poke this story with a stick a bit more. As told in the NYT article, it doesn't hold together for me. But it's interesting. I guess I have to read the book.

It's too good to be true, isn't it? And it seems a bit pat--send girls to school and you won't have al-Queda! Welllllllll yeah.

(I also bet her brothers only put up with her because she's making a bunch of money off the book. Assuming she actually exists.)

Yeah, that's how I felt. My alarm bells went off at the news that she's now back living with her family (the same family that apparently sold her to this guy in marriage), and that they're making a lot of money off her story. I just don't understand why, in that kind of culture, her family would take her back in the first place. Surely the fact she'd demanded a divorce would be humiliating, and hell, they *got rid* of her a few years earlier. Why take back another mouth to feed?

Like you said, it sounds too good to be true. The feisty-girl-stands-up-for-herself tale is an easy sell to the Western media. I just hope that someone somewhere has done a thorough job of checking her out, because having her exposed as a liar (if, as you said, she exists at all) would not help the cause.
