I read a lot of J.G. Ballard's sci-fi in high school, but I knew him first as the guy who wrote Empire of the Sun based (in part) on his experiences living in a Japanese-run internment camp in WW2 China.
The youtube clip is from Spielberg's great (I think) film adaptation, starring a young Christian Bale as Jamie Ballard, a young British kid living in Shanghai on Dec 8 1941.
