I just realized that "plot coupon" plots, although one of the most despised plots in the fantasy genre, are actually pretty realistic.
Witness "in order to do task x, you must first talk to the three random people in BH, and follow their directions to the mysterious tower from which you can obain form 2a, which upon close reading will lead you to form 2b, which will need you to get the signature of someone in a completely different part of campus..."
