I think the majority of bad writers fill pages and pages of unnecessary description when most readers want just enough detail to understand or imagine what's going on. You can tell when an author is no longer interested in (or unable to advance) the plot or characters when they start spewing superfluous details which no one cares about. One of the drawbacks of being paid by the page. If it doesn't add to the story, don't use it. Btw, in The Seven Samurai, he only got two, not seven. :)
